NSW allocates $408m to fast tracking elective surgery

An extra $408 million will go towards fast-tracking elective surgeries to address COVID backlogs – the final major announcement on the eve of the state budget.

The money will go towards boosting staff and hiring 267 more full-time workers, with some hospitals to establish theatres on evenings and weekends.

The state government will also pay private hospitals to deal with the elective surgery backlog – there are currently 18,000 people on the waitlist who are classified as overdue.
