Defence Minister Richard Marles says reports of Chinese missiles being fired near Taiwan is “deeply concerning”.
In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit, China’s military is conducting its largest drills aimed at Taiwan in more than 25 years, which will last through to Sunday.
“We really need to be moving down a path of trying to de-escalate tensions around Taiwan,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.
“Our position remains unchanged.
“We don’t want to see any unilateral changes to the status quo on either side of the Taiwan Strait, and we really need to be urging everyone to de-escalate the tensions that we see there.”
