Ex-Inter midfielder Stankovic joins Sampdoria as coach

ROME: Former Inter Milan and Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic (Picture) has been hired as Sampdoria coach, the Serie A bottom team announced on Thursday.

Stankovic takes over from Marco Giampaolo, who was sacked on Sunday after six defeats and two draws so far this season.

44-year-old Stankovic resigned from his post as Red Star Belgrade coach after they failed to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.

“The Serb has signed a contract until June 30, 2023 with an option until June 30, 2024,” the Genoa club said.

“On behalf of President Marco Lanna, the board and everyone at the club, we wish our new coach the best of luck in his job,” they added.

Stankovic spent 17 years as a Serie A player, winning the Scudetto six times and the 2010 Champions League with Inter.

Stankovic’s first game in charge will be the trip to 17th in Bologna on Saturday.AFP
