KZN mother who asked not to be convicted for abandoning baby files herself

A 23-year-old mother who abandoned her baby in the bush in Verulam – with a note urging others not to judge her – surrendered herself to police on Thursday.

The woman came forward three days after leaving her three-month-old baby next to a creek in Dawncrest.

“The woman was arrested after surrendering to SAPS following a public outcry on social media platforms in South Africa. The young mother has been charged and appeared before Verulam Magistrates’ Court today [Thursday] and he was granted bail of 500 rand,” said Prem Balram of Reaction Unit SA (Rusa).

He said the matter had been referred back to November 10.

Rusa officers were called to the scene on Monday when a mango picker found the abandoned baby.
