Israel pushes Albania into top flight of Nations League – The Australian Jewish News

Israel’s men’s national football team defeated visiting Albania 2-1 in Tel Aviv on September 24 to propel Israel to the top of their group in the 2022 UEFA Nations League, earning them a place in the 2024 qualifying play-offs.

After a largely uneventful first half at Bloomfield Stadium, a long pass from midfielder Gabi Kanichowsky set up Israel’s first goal through Shon Weissman just a minute into the second half.

But the Albanian side struck back, with Myrto Uzuni scoring in the 88th minute to draw the teams 1-1.

In added time, after 92 minutes, Tai Baribo scored Israel’s second goal to secure the win.

First in Group 2 of League B with eight points, Israel now automatically qualify for League A and the qualifying play-offs for UEFA 2024 in Germany.

The play-offs tournament in March 2024 will determine the last three teams taking part in the UEFA Euro 2024 finals, also in Germany.
