Rejoice Fortnite players: Sony is finally allowing cross-platform play on PlayStation 4.
The company will mark its landmark decision to introduce the new feature by launching an open beta for PlayStation 4 Fortnite players on September 26th, giving them the opportunity to compete against other players on different consoles.
Notably, this is the first time in history that players on a PlayStation console will be allowed to play with players on other platforms.
Fortnite’s open beta for cross-console play on PlayStation 4 just launched on September 26th
According to a post on PlayStation Blog, Fortnite’s open beta will be the first step in “supporting cross-platform features for select third-party content.”
“After an extensive evaluation process, SIE identified a path to support cross-platform functionality for select third-party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and appreciate the community’s continued patience as we navigated this issue to find a resolution.
“The first step will be an open beta starting today for Fortnite, allowing cross-platform gameplay, progression, and trading across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing to ensure cross-platform play on PlayStation is at its best, while also paying attention to the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.
“For 24 years we have strived to give our fans the best gaming experience by offering a unique PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities surrounding some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players.
“This represents a major policy change for SIE and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community as soon as we have more details to share,” the blog post reads.
The new decision marks a big shift for Sony, which has long resisted cross-console play for its PlayStation platform, despite many other companies opting for it.
It also follows years of increasingly vocal criticism from PlayStation fans for allowing cross-console play, something the Japanese tech giant has finally heeded.
