2022 Volkswagen ID Xtreme electric concept car

This could be the electric car Aussies have been waiting for.

Previously electric cars have been city focused but Volkswagen is testing the market’s enthusiasm for an off-road focused electric adventure machine with a new concept.

Dubbed the ID Xtreme the zero emission concept is based on the high-performance ID. 4 GTX but adds a bunch of off-road parts and boosts power outputs significantly.

Silke Bagschik, who heads up the division that is responsible for the concept, believes the concept takes electric performance to a new level.

“We are really eager to find out how the fans of electromobility react to the vehicle. Based on the feedback from our community, we will decide how to proceed with the project,” adds Silke Bagschik.

The dual motors provide all-wheel drive grip and make a combined 285kW – up 65kW on the standard ID. 4 GTX variant.

Unlike the standard GTX, VW has fitted the concept with a bigger 82kWh battery compared to the 77kWh unit found in the regular version.

Potential range is unknown as the additional power compared to other ID. 4s will drain the battery quicker.

VW has added additional underbody protection to help guard the batteries that are located under the vehicle’s floor.

Big 18-inch off-road wheels provide superior grip on loose surfaces and a small bullbar adds increased protection upfront.

The ID Xtreme also scores roof rails and an LED light bar.

Inside the Xtreme concept makes wide use of premium Alcantara faux suede upholstery and adds a splash of colour with bright orange highlights.

VW has been slow to bring its electric cars to Australia but it is likely to start selling the ID. 4 and ID. 5 EVs in Australia from next year.

The ID. 4 was voted the World Car of the Year in 2022 and has been well received in Europe where it has been on sale for the past year.

It comes with several battery options and also a performance focused GTX version that is the brand’s electric version of its GTI badge.
